Tom: The Emotional Robot

Tom was a young humanoid robot. He looked just like humans. But, his body was made of metal instead of bones, muscles and skin. His mind worked as it was programmed and his body was programmed to work just like humans. He could do all types of works without rest, for a long time. In fact, Tom was a good companion. Miss Smith had Tom as her best friend. She loved Tom just like her own son. Tom too loved her like his mother. He gave her company and looked after her all the time. Tom was the best companion for her in the whole world. But, he had some needs. He must be charged at the end of the day. His system must be repaired every month and he must be re – programmed every year.Miss Smith fulfilled all his needs and took care of him. Tom had some complications. If he is teased or disturbed, then his actions would get dangerous. At that time, he could kill the man with just one punch. So, that was very dangerous. Thus, anyone staying with Tom must take precautions, not to disturb him. After all, Miss Smith and Tom lived happily.
After some days, Miss Smith got married and she had two sons, Jack and John. Miss Smith cared for her sons and started ignoring Tom. Both of her sons too didn’t like him and ignored him. Soon, Tom was no more loved and he became lonelier and sad. Anyone didn’t even talk to him. He was no more taken for repairing or re – programming. Many days passed like this and Tom had to bear the hatred that he was treated with.
One day, Tom’s room was seen locked. Anyone didn’t bother about it at first. Mrs. Smith noticed the thing and became upset. She knocked at the door and tried to call Tom, at once. But, there was no answer from the other end. Finally, she broke the door out of curiosity to find Tom’s body parts lying here and there on the floor. Soon, they were taken to the Robotics Center and the whole story was narrated to the experts. They replied that Tom couldn’t tolerate the hatred and felt lonely. Thus, he became emotional and angry. His system too grew weak as it was not repaired or re – programmed for many days. So, one day, he detached his body parts from his body and destroyed them out of anger. Then, he deactivated his system and destroyed himself. This was the whole story.
This incident proved that robots too have emotions and they must be treated just as we, humans are treated.
